On May 15, 2026, I released Gloria Patri — Songs of the Holy Trinity, a sacred music album created under my artist name Yehoshua of Ēatūn.

This album is different from some of the other music I have been creating.

Where The Flame Remains and the Quiet Light psalm projects grew directly out of The Keeper’s Lantern and the spiritual language of The Way of Quiet Light, Gloria Patri stands as something more traditional, more liturgical, and more deliberately centered on one of the deepest mysteries of the Christian faith:

One God.
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The Holy Trinity.

This is not simply a collection of religious songs. It is an album built around confession, worship, Scripture, doctrine, and reverence. It reaches toward the sound of the church: the cathedral, the choir, the organ, the ancient hymn, the prayer spoken across generations.

Why Gloria Patri?

The title Gloria Patri comes from one of the most enduring doxologies of the Christian tradition:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

That simple phrase carries the whole purpose of the album.

This project is a musical offering of praise to the Triune God. It is not trying to reinvent Christianity, soften it into something vague, or turn worship into mere atmosphere. It is meant to be clear, reverent, and rooted.

The Father creates, sustains, and reigns.
The Son redeems, shepherds, and intercedes.
The Holy Spirit comforts, sanctifies, and gives life.

The album moves through those themes with a sound that leans heavily into sacred tradition: cathedral choir, organ, orchestral arrangements, hymn-like melodies, and a slower, more prayerful pace.

It is music meant to feel less like entertainment and more like worship.

A More Traditional Sacred Album

In many ways, Gloria Patri — Songs of the Holy Trinity became the traditionalist centerpiece of my sacred music work so far.

Some of my earlier projects carried the language of lanterns, quiet light, wilderness, perseverance, and spiritual endurance. Those themes remain deeply important to me. But this album steps closer to the heart of historic Christian confession.

It is about the God we worship.

Not merely God as an abstract force.
Not merely spirituality as a feeling.
Not merely faith as personal comfort.

But God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

That distinction matters.

Christian worship has always been Trinitarian at its core. We pray to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit. We are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The shape of Christian faith is not random. It is deeply ordered, deeply beautiful, and deeply sacred.

That is the atmosphere this album tries to enter.

The structure moves through praise, confession, mercy, creed, surrender, protection, and prayer.

Some songs are more hymn-like. Others feel more like sacred meditations. Some draw from ancient Christian language, while others are written in a way that feels more direct and accessible. But all of them share the same centre: worship of the Triune God.

Songs of Worship and Confession

A song like Holy, Holy, Holy immediately places the listener in the language of worship. It is not casual. It is not light. It begins in reverence.

I Believe and We Believe carry the character of creed and confession. These are not songs about vague optimism. They are songs about what Christians confess to be true.

Agnus Dei brings the focus to Christ, the Lamb of God, and the mercy of the Son.

Our Father in Heaven closes the album in prayer, returning everything to the words Christ gave His disciples.

That was important to me. I did not want the album to end in spectacle. I wanted it to end in prayer.

The Sound of the Album

The sound of Gloria Patri was designed to feel sacred, spacious, and ancient.

The album leans into:

• cathedral-style atmosphere

• choir and layered vocals

• pipe organ and orchestral textures

• slow, reverent pacing

• traditional hymn structure

• solemn but hopeful worship

This is not meant to be background noise for scrolling. It is meant to be listened to with attention.

It is the kind of music I imagine playing in a quiet room, in the early morning, during prayer, during reflection, or while trying to reconnect with the deeper foundations of faith.

There is a kind of stillness in this album. Not emptiness. Stillness.

The kind that invites you to stop speaking for a moment and remember that God is holy.

Why This Album Matters to Me

I have been building a wider body of creative work: books, articles, music, spiritual reflections, and projects connected to The Way of Quiet Light.

But Gloria Patri matters because it points beyond the project itself.

The purpose of sacred art should never be to trap attention on the artist. It should lift the eyes upward.

That is what I wanted this album to do.

I wanted to create something that could stand as a musical act of worship. Something rooted in faith. Something that does not apologize for Christian doctrine. Something that honours the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit without watering down the mystery.

The Trinity is not a puzzle to be solved like a math problem. It is a mystery to be confessed, worshipped, and approached with humility.

Music can help us do that.

Sometimes the heart understands through worship what the mind struggles to fully explain.

With its release on May 15, 2026, Gloria Patri — Songs of the Holy Trinity now joins my growing catalogue of sacred music under Yehoshua of Ēatūn.

It is, in many ways, one of the most explicitly Christian and doctrinally centered releases I have made so far.

It is not just an album about faith.

It is an album of worship.

It is an album of confession.

It is an album of praise.

Final Reflection

At the heart of this project is a simple act of doxology:

Glory to the Father.
Glory to the Son.
Glory to the Holy Spirit.

That is what Gloria Patri means.

That is what the album is for.

Not noise.
Not performance.
Not self-promotion.

Praise.

And in a world that is so often loud, distracted, confused, and spiritually exhausted, maybe one of the most important things we can still do is return to worship.

To kneel again.
To listen again.
To confess again.
To remember again.

Glory be forever.
The flame remains.

Few teachings in Christianity are as central, profound, and sometimes misunderstood as the Holy Trinity. Many have heard the phrase Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, yet not everyone fully understands what it means or why it matters.

The Trinity is not an abstract theological puzzle meant only for scholars. It is one of the most important truths of the Christian faith because it helps us understand who God is, how God has revealed Himself, and how we relate to Him.

To understand Christianity properly, we must understand the Trinity.

What Is the Holy Trinity?

The doctrine of the Trinity teaches that:

• There is one God

• God exists eternally as three distinct Persons

• These Persons are:

  • The Father

  • The Son (Jesus Christ)

  • The Holy Spirit

These three are not three gods. Christianity is not polytheistic. There is only one true God.

Scripture is clear:

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”
— Deuteronomy 6:4

Yet Scripture also reveals the Father as God, the Son as God, and the Holy Spirit as God.

This is why Christians confess One God in Three Persons.

The Father Is God

This truth is widely accepted and clearly taught throughout Scripture.

“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
— Romans 1:7

The Father is the source of creation, the one who sends the Son, and the one who loves the world.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son...”
— John 3:16

The Son Is God

Jesus Christ is not merely a prophet, teacher, or created being. Christianity teaches that Jesus is fully God and fully man.

John opens his Gospel with these powerful words:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
— John 1:1

And then:

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us...”
— John 1:14

Jesus accepted worship, forgave sins, calmed storms, raised the dead, and declared divine authority.

Thomas, after seeing the risen Christ, said:

“My Lord and my God.”
— John 20:28

Jesus did not correct him.

The Holy Spirit Is God

The Holy Spirit is not merely an energy or force. The Holy Spirit is divine, personal, and active.

In Acts, lying to the Holy Spirit is equated with lying to God:

“You have not lied unto men, but unto God.”
— Acts 5:3–4

The Holy Spirit teaches, comforts, convicts, guides, and empowers believers.

Jesus said:

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost... he shall teach you all things.”
— John 14:26

Distinct Persons, Perfect Unity

The Father is not the Son.
The Son is not the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is not the Father.

They are distinct Persons, yet perfectly united in essence, will, and glory.

We see this clearly at the baptism of Jesus:

“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water... and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove... And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son...”
— Matthew 3:16–17

In one moment:

• The Son is baptized

• The Spirit descends

• The Father speaks

All three are present.

Why the Trinity Matters

Some ask, “Why does this doctrine matter in everyday life?”

Because the Trinity reveals the very nature of God.

1. God Is Relational

Before creation existed, love already existed within God Himself—Father, Son, and Spirit in eternal fellowship.

“God is love.”
— 1 John 4:8

Love did not begin when humans were created. Love has always existed within the Trinity.

2. Salvation Is Trinitarian

Our salvation involves all three Persons:

• The Father sends the Son

• The Son dies and rises again

• The Holy Spirit applies grace to believers

“Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ...”
— 1 Peter 1:2

3. Prayer Makes Sense Through the Trinity

Christians pray to the Father, through the Son, by the Holy Spirit.

“For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.”
— Ephesians 2:18

Common Misunderstandings

“Christians Worship Three Gods”

False. Christianity teaches one God.

“The Trinity Means Three Parts of God”

False. Each Person is fully God, not one-third of God.

“The Trinity Is Invented”

False. The word Trinity developed later as a summary term, but the teaching comes directly from Scripture.

Jesus commanded baptism:

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”
— Matthew 28:19

Notice name is singular, yet three Persons are named.

Can We Fully Understand the Trinity?

Not completely.

The Trinity is understandable in part, but God is greater than the human mind can fully contain.

If God were small enough to be fully explained, He would not be God.

Scripture gives us enough truth to know Him, worship Him, and trust Him.

Why This Is Foundational to Christianity

If Jesus is not truly God, salvation collapses.

If the Holy Spirit is not truly God, divine transformation collapses.

If God is not Father, Son, and Spirit, the Gospel story itself changes.

The Trinity is not an optional side doctrine. It sits at the heart of Christian belief.

A Simple Summary

There is one God.
The Father is God.
The Son is God.
The Holy Spirit is God.
The Father is not the Son.
The Son is not the Spirit.
The Spirit is not the Father.

One God. Three Persons. Eternal Glory.

Final Reflection

The Trinity reminds us that God is deeper than slogans, richer than shallow religion, and more glorious than human categories.

He is the Father who loves.
He is the Son who saves.
He is the Spirit who dwells with His people.

To know the Trinity is not merely to know doctrine.

It is to know the God of Christianity.

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all.”

A Note from Joshua Eaton, The Lantern’s Keeper

The language used throughout this article has been intentionally presented in a simpler, clearer, and more accessible form so that the teaching may be understood by as many people as possible.

Some theological subjects, especially ones as profound as the Holy Trinity, are often explained using highly technical or academic language that can feel difficult, distant, or overwhelming to the average reader. My desire here was not to diminish the depth of the doctrine, but to make it more serviceable to everyday people seeking truth.

Faith should not be hidden behind unnecessary complexity. The truths of God should be able to reach ordinary hearts, ordinary homes, and ordinary lives.

For that reason, this lesson was written in plain and understandable English so that more people may read it, reflect on it, and grow in their understanding of the Christian faith.

The Lantern’s Keeper

I’m pleased to share that my first official paperback is now under review:

The Rule of the Keeper: A Voluntary Rhythm for Those Who Tend the Light

This book was designed to go hand in hand with The Keeper’s Lantern, and in many ways it grows directly out of that work. Where The Keeper’s Lantern lays out the spiritual and reflective framework, The Rule of the Keeper is meant to be lived with — not just read once, but returned to daily.

At its heart, this is a devotional journal.

It is built to guide reflection throughout the rhythm of life: morning, afternoon, evening, weekly, and yearly. It provides structure for self-examination, for quiet thought, for spiritual attentiveness, and for the practice of actually writing down what one is learning, noticing, carrying, and praying through over time.

This is not simply a blank notebook.

It is a guided journal designed to help people reflect on their days, their weeks, and their longer journey, while also giving them room to make notes, record thoughts, and respond to the prompts and rhythms laid out within the book itself.

That is what makes it important to me.

It was always meant to stand beside The Keeper’s Lantern as a companion work. In fact, it was originally supposed to be released on March 17, alongside The Keeper’s Lantern itself. But because this is a paperback, the process proved much more technically demanding than I had first expected.

Formatting a print book is very different from formatting an eBook.

There were a great many production details I had to learn along the way — especially involving page counts, margins, interior layout, cover measurements, and the way print specifications change depending on the final length of the book. With paperback formatting, the page count affects everything, and that means you cannot properly finalize certain elements until the structure of the book is fully settled. The cover itself also becomes a technical exercise, since its measurements depend on the thickness of the finished book and have to be calculated correctly.

That learning curve was real.

And because I was also working on The Keeper’s Lantern, the special edition material, the foundation for the Definitive Edition, the audiobook release, and the growing body of music and audio work, this journal necessarily had to wait longer than intended.

But now, with so much of that audio and publishing work brought to a stronger place, I finally had the time to return to this project and correct the formatting problems properly.

That part of the journey matters to me too, because this book was not outsourced into existence. I had to learn how to do it. I had to work through the errors, understand the requirements, and figure out what the print process actually demanded. In the end, I was able to take the technical guidance, simplify it into a practical set of formatting instructions, and use that to bring the book to a proper state for submission.

As of April 17, The Rule of the Keeper has now been submitted for review.

At the moment, it remains under review, and if all goes well, I expect it to be approved within the next few days.

When it becomes available, it will be sold on the Canadian store for $39.99 CAD.

I understand that for some people, forty dollars for a journal may sound expensive at first glance. But this is not a minimal black-and-white paperback. It is being produced in full colour, with artwork on the exterior and additional visual content on the inside as well. It is also being printed on higher-quality paper, because the full-colour presentation requires a higher production standard. That means the print costs are significantly higher than they would be for a simpler paperback.

So while it is priced higher than a basic journal, it is also being made as something far more substantial and beautiful than a basic journal.

This is meant to be a full-year companion.

A book to return to every day.
A place to write.
A place to reflect.
A place to order the rhythms of morning, afternoon, evening, weekly, and yearly self-examination in a more intentional way.

That is the value of it.

And because it is my first official paperback, that milestone matters to me personally as well. So much of my work until now has lived digitally — as eBooks, music, audio releases, and related material. This paperback represents something more tangible: a work meant to be held, written in, carried, used, and returned to over time.

That makes it a very meaningful release for me.

There is also the possibility of a hardcover edition in the future. That is something I may pursue once the paperback is approved and available. If I do move forward with a hardcover, it will likely come at a higher price point and may include some further refinement to the presentation and artwork. But for now, the paperback is the immediate focus, and I wanted to announce clearly that it is now in review.

So this is the official announcement:

I’m pleased to officially announce that The Keeper’s Lantern: Definitive Edition is now on the way.

This edition is set for pre-order, with an official release date of July 1, 2026 — Canada Day.

And to be clear: this is not a minor revision.

This is the definitive edition of The Keeper’s Lantern — the fullest, strongest, and most complete version of the work I have produced.

Where the original book was roughly 120 pages, the Definitive Edition is currently estimated to come in at well over 300 pages. In other words, this is not simply an updated release. It is a book that has been substantially expanded, deeply reworked, and rebuilt with much greater depth, clarity, and weight.

That matters because one of the main purposes of this edition is to take what was already present in The Keeper’s Lantern and carry it further.

The original framework remains. The heart of the work remains. But this edition goes much deeper into the thought process behind it, the experiences that shaped it, and the reasoning that led me to articulate its themes the way I did. It includes far more personal detail, greater examination of key ideas, and much more thorough treatment of many of the book’s chapters and themes.

A great deal of the expansion comes from revisiting chapters that were, in my view, meaningful and well-written in their original form, but still capable of being developed further. In many cases, chapters that were once relatively brief have now been expanded considerably, allowing more room for explanation, reflection, nuance, and structure.

That alone makes this a much larger work.

But the expansion does not stop there.

The Definitive Edition also brings in major material that was either absent from the original book, only partially developed, or previously available only in other forms — including content from the special edition, along with additional sections and revisions that greatly deepen the scope of the work.

This includes expanded treatment of subjects such as the Ten Commandments, with fresh examination, explanation, and reflection on how their logic is to be understood and applied. It also includes material that had previously existed only in special or limited formats, now brought more fully into the body of the work itself.

In that sense, this edition is both an expansion and a consolidation.

It brings together the original The Keeper’s Lantern, material from the special edition, and a far deeper level of development across the book as a whole. It is not simply a corrected copy of what came before. It is the version in which the work is being allowed to become what it was always meant to be.

That is why I call it the Definitive Edition.

It is also being built with much greater care on the publishing side. This edition is being composed specifically within Kindle’s formatting tools, with significant effort being put into presentation, structure, style, and readability. A great deal of attention is being given not only to expansion, but to correction — addressing mistakes, improving flow, refining the reading experience, and rebuilding the book in a more polished and intentional form.

So this is not only a larger book.

It is a more mature one.

It reflects what I have learned since the original release — both about the work itself and about the process of publishing it properly. It carries more detail, more thought, more personal clarity, more supporting structure, and more weight. It says more because I now have more to say, and because I have gone back through the earlier work with a clearer eye toward what needed to be strengthened, corrected, expanded, and more fully articulated.

For anyone who has read the original The Keeper’s Lantern, this edition should be understood as the version that most fully represents the work.

This is the expanded version.
This is the corrected version.
This is the deeper version.
This is the definitive version.

In terms of availability, The Keeper’s Lantern: Definitive Edition will be available only through Amazon Kindle. It will not be released on Kobo or other eBook platforms because it is being enrolled in Kindle Unlimited, which means this edition will remain exclusive to Kindle.

The book will be available for $9.99 CAD, and for Kindle Unlimited subscribers, it will be available as part of that program as well.

That exclusivity is intentional because I want this edition to have a clear home and a strong release structure. The regular edition of The Keeper’s Lantern remains its own release. But the Definitive Edition is the version that fully gathers the larger vision of the work and presents it in its strongest and most complete form.

There is still work being done.

This is still a work in progress, and I will continue conducting edits and refinements as the release approaches. But the direction is clear, the structure is taking shape, and the book is well on its way.

And when it arrives on July 1, 2026, it will stand as the definitive edition of The Keeper’s Lantern.

As of this morning, April 20, 2026, the audiobook edition of The Keeper’s Lantern is officially available.

It is available now on Audible, and because it was distributed through Amazon’s ACX platform, ACX’s retail partners for audiobook distribution are Audible, Amazon, and Apple Books. That means Audible is the primary home, with Amazon and Apple Books also part of ACX’s normal retail distribution network.

This release matters to me for a number of reasons.

First, it is built on the original framework of The Keeper’s Lantern, but it is not limited to the standard eBook version alone. It also includes a range of additional material drawn from the broader world of the work, including content that goes beyond the original regular edition and brings in pieces associated with the expanded special-edition vision.

But more importantly, this is not simply a spoken reading of a book.

What makes this release different is that it was created not merely as an audiobook, but as an audio experience — something meant to be listened to as a work of art in its own right.

Rather than simply reading songs, prayers, and sacred pieces as plain spoken text, this production incorporates music directly into the experience itself. The psalms that formed The Flame Remains, my first album, are included in the audiobook in musical form. Pieces such as The Keeper’s Invocation and The Oath of the Keeper are also produced musically, giving the work a deeper emotional and artistic texture than a traditional narration alone would provide.

That distinction is important to me.

I did not want this release to feel like a book being read aloud without transformation. I wanted it to feel immersive. I wanted it to feel intentional. I wanted it to feel like the listener was entering not only a text, but a crafted audio world — one in which spoken word, music, prayer, atmosphere, and devotion work together.

That is why I think of it less as a conventional audiobook and more as an Audible experience.

It is still rooted in The Keeper’s Lantern. It still carries the structure, message, and spiritual framework of the book. But in audio form, it becomes something more layered — a presentation of the work that moves beyond narration and into a more fully produced artistic experience.

For those who have followed the book, the music, and the broader work of The Way of Quiet Light, this release brings those elements together in a particularly meaningful way. It joins the written world of The Keeper’s Lantern with the musical world already beginning to emerge through the psalms, hymns, invocations, and devotional pieces that have grown around it.

This album is a much larger and broader work than my first release, containing 21 tracks — more than double the size of The Flame Remains. Where that first album was focused more narrowly, The Everlasting Light expands outward into a wider collection of psalms and hymns, drawing from material that stretches from the medieval era through the 1800s.

That range is part of what gives this album its character.

It brings together music shaped by centuries of Christian devotion, prayer, worship, and reflection, while also carrying it through the spirit of The Way of Quiet Light. Each hymn or psalm included in the album is framed with a brief opening and closing commentary in that spirit, helping guide the listener into and out of the song in a way that reflects the larger vision behind the work.

Because of that, the album is not simply a collection of familiar sacred titles. It is a reworking and presentation of them through my own creative and devotional lens.

The versions included here have been specially adapted for this album, with lyrics prepared in my own form and held as my own copyrighted work. That matters to me because this project is not merely about reproducing older material. It is about receiving it, shaping it faithfully, and carrying it forward in a way that is both reverent and personal.

Musically, the album moves across a wide range of tones and textures.

Some of the songs are very light, gentle, and reflective. Others are far more cinematic, powerful, and expansive in their arrangement. The album opens with a very beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace, and it closes with The Lord’s Prayer, presented in a form that remains essentially unmodified. Though they were released together for Easter, these songs come from two very different places.

One is deeply personal — a song about survival, meaning, calling, and the light that led me back.
The other is explicitly sacred — a song dedicated to the resurrection of Christ and the victory of Easter morning.

Together, they belong to Easter.

The Light Led Me Back

This song is personal in a way that is difficult to describe lightly.

This song speaks to the realization that the light I encountered when I almost died did not bring me into heaven or hell because it was not my time. Instead, the light led me back. And through everything that has unfolded since September 2025, I have come to understand that return differently — not as an accident, not as unfinished confusion, but as part of a greater calling.

That is what this song is about.

It is about survival.
It is about meaning.
It is about context finally arriving after a long season of pain, uncertainty, and reflection.
And above all, it is about the truth that the light led me back for a reason.

The Day the Stone Was Lifted

If The Light Led Me Back is a personal testimony, The Day the Stone Was Lifted is an Easter proclamation.

This song is dedicated to the resurrection of Christ — to the victory, hope, and holy triumph at the heart of Easter Sunday. Where Good Friday carries the sorrow of the cross, Easter carries the joy of the empty tomb. It is the day death was defeated, the day grief was broken open by glory, and the day hope stood up alive.

That is the spirit behind this song.

The Day the Stone Was Lifted is a musical declaration of resurrection — a song shaped by praise, reverence, and the central Christian confession:

Hallelujah, He is risen.

It was important to me that this song be released on Easter itself, because it belongs to Easter in every sense. It is not simply inspired by the resurrection in a broad way. It is dedicated to it. It was written to honour the risen Christ and the meaning of that day.

One speaks from personal return.

Though released together on the same day, these are two very different pieces in theme, tone, and origin. One is deeply personal, reaching into my own experience of mortality and return. The other is centered on the crucifixion of Christ and the solemn weight of Good Friday itself.

They belong together in release, but each carries its own story.

The Sound of Silence, I Returned

This piece is rooted in my near-death experience in 2020.

There are moments in life that divide everything into a before and an after. Experiences that do not simply leave an impression, but alter the way one hears silence, the way one understands fear, the way one carries memory, and the way one regards the fact of still being here at all.

The Sound of Silence, I Returned comes from that place.

It is a deeply personal work, shaped by the reality of having passed through something that felt like the edge of life itself and then returning from it. Because of that, the song is not merely reflective in a general sense. It is bound up with survival, memory, confrontation, and the strange and difficult weight of continuing on after an experience that cannot easily be reduced to ordinary language.

That is part of why this song matters so much to me.

It is not simply a release. It is a testimony in musical form — personal, serious, and inseparable from what I lived through.

Into Your Hands

If The Sound of Silence, I Returned is personal, Into Your Hands is explicitly devotional.

This single is based on the crucifixion of Christ, and because of that, Good Friday was the right day for its release.

Good Friday is not merely a date on the calendar. It is a day of remembrance, grief, reverence, sacrifice, and holy weight. It turns the mind toward the suffering of Christ, toward surrender, toward the cross, and toward the words spoken in the final hours of His earthly life.

Into Your Hands was created in that spirit.

It is meant to reflect on the crucifixion with seriousness and reverence, drawing its heart from that moment of surrender, suffering, and obedience. Where one song reaches into a personal confrontation with death and return, this one turns toward the death of Christ Himself — not as abstraction, but as the center of Good Friday’s meaning.

That is why these two songs were released together.

One speaks from personal experience.
One speaks from sacred remembrance.
One looks at returning.
One looks at surrender.

And together, they formed the right release for Good Friday.

I’m grateful to say this officially:

The Keeper’s Lantern was released on March 17 as the regular eBook edition, available on Kindle and Kobo.

That date was especially meaningful to me, as it was released on my birthday, March 17. While I had previously announced the special edition, this release marks the launch of the regular version of The Keeper’s Lantern for wider eBook availability.

So this is the formal announcement for that edition.

Since the initial release, I have also made further updates to the book. As of April 18, the content has been revised to correct errors that were present in the earlier version. These changes were made to improve the reading experience and to ensure the book more accurately reflects the work as it was intended to be presented.

In addition to those text updates, new artwork has also been uploaded as part of the ongoing refinement of the book’s presentation.

There have also been some changes to format availability.

At this time, paperback and hardcover editions have been removed, and The Keeper’s Lantern is presently available as an eBook through Kindle and Kobo.

This release represents an important step for me personally. The Keeper’s Lantern is not simply a book release in the ordinary sense. It is part of a much larger body of work — one rooted in faith, endurance, stewardship, reflection, and the call to carry light faithfully through a darkened world. Its launch marks the public availability of that work in its regular edition, and I am deeply thankful to everyone who has supported it.

For anyone who has been following the broader journey of The Way of Quiet Light, this is one more important milestone.

This release marks the beginning of the musical branch of my work — a body of music rooted in faith, reflection, reverence, and the spiritual world that has also shaped The Keeper’s Lantern and The Way of Quiet Light. With this album, those written psalms begin to take on musical form.

The Flame Remains is also dedicated to my mother, Joy Millett.

That dedication matters deeply to me. I wanted this first release to carry not only the beginning of a new chapter in my work, but also a personal note of love, gratitude, and remembrance. It felt right that this first album should be tied to someone whose place in my life is meaningful, lasting, and worthy of honour.

Some announcements deserve more than a passing mention.

This is one of them.

From this point forward, the name under which I release my music is Yehoshua of Ēatūn.

This is the official artist name under which I will be publishing my musical work: psalms, hymns, singles, and other gospel-related releases. It is also why I have created a dedicated section here on Substack under that name. Going forward, that section will serve as the home for future music-related updates, album announcements, release notes, and related reflections, so that those who want to follow this part of my work can find it gathered in one place.

I wanted to introduce that name clearly and properly, because it was not chosen at random, nor was it chosen merely because it sounded distinctive. It was chosen because it is historically, linguistically, and spiritually connected to my own name.

Many people know me as Joshua Eaton. That remains my own name. But for my music, I wanted a name that reached more deliberately into the older roots of both the personal and family name I carry — one that reflected not only identity, but inheritance, scriptural gravity, and historical continuity.

That is what Yehoshua of Ēatūn represents.

The first name, Yehoshua, is the older Hebrew form behind the English name Joshua. Encyclopedia Britannica identifies Yehoshua as the Hebrew form of Joshua and gives its meaning as “Yahweh is deliverance.” That matters to me deeply because it means the name does not merely sound ancient; it is ancient. It carries scriptural weight, covenantal resonance, and a meaning rooted in divine salvation.

That older form also carries a specific biblical history. In the Hebrew Bible, the figure known in English as Joshua is the successor to Moses, the one appointed to lead Israel forward after Moses’ death. Britannica describes him as the personally appointed successor to Moses. So when I chose Yehoshua, I was not simply choosing a foreign-language variation of my first name. I was choosing to reach back toward the older and more original form of a name that already carries scriptural significance, leadership, continuity, and the idea of being led forward under God.

There is more to it than that as well. The name Joshua is connected to the Hebrew verbal root associated with salvation and deliverance. Sources on Biblical Hebrew naming note that Hoshea is connected to the Hebrew root meaning “to save,” and that in Numbers 13:16, Moses gives Hoshea the name Yehoshuaʿ. That matters because it means Yehoshua is not merely a different pronunciation of “Joshua”; it points directly back into the linguistic and scriptural world from which the English form came.

That was important to me.

Because the music I am releasing is not casual in its intent. It is not merely entertainment separated from the deeper body of work I have been building. It is music rooted in faith, scripture, reverence, endurance, prayer, and gospel conviction. For that reason, I did not want to release it under a name that felt disconnected from those things. I wanted the name itself to bear some of that history.

The second part of the artist's name, Ēatūn, carries that same principle into my family name.

This is not a decorative respelling. It is not simply a stylized invention. It reaches back to the earliest historical form of my surname in its English lineage. Authoritative surname references trace Eaton to Old English place-name elements such as ēa (“river”) and tūn (“enclosure,” “settlement,” or “town”), while other standard references note related forms connected with a river, island, or low-lying land plus tūn. In other words, the older form is not ornamental; it is historical.

That distinction matters to me a great deal.

When I chose to use Ēatūn, I was not trying to create distance from the name Eaton. I was doing the opposite. I was reaching backward toward its older form and historical character. I wanted the name under which I release sacred and gospel-centered music to reflect not only who I am in the present, but the older linguistic roots from which that identity descends.

So while I am not releasing this music under the name Joshua Eaton, I am also not stepping away from my own name. I am, in a very real sense, going deeper into it.

That is why the name matters.

It is the older Hebrew root of my first name, joined to the older historical form of my family name. It brings together scriptural inheritance and English lineage. It is personal, historical, and deliberate.

And because of the type of music I am releasing, that deeper grounding felt fitting.

Writing and music do not always ask to be carried in the same way. Writing can explain things. It can teach, reason, clarify, and unfold. Music can do something different. It can pray. It can lament. It can praise. It can carry sorrow and reverence together. It can speak to the soul in ways that prose often cannot.

That is especially true of the work I am now releasing under this name.

My first release as Yehoshua of Ēatūn is The Flame Remains, released on March 28, 2026 — my mother’s birthday. That release consists essentially of Psalms 1 through 11 from The Keeper’s Lantern, given musical form. I had felt for some time that those psalms would live naturally as music. They were written as texts, but from the beginning, there was something in them that seemed to call for melody, atmosphere, and full musical expression.

So this release is not a departure from The Keeper’s Lantern. It is an extension of it.

And that will continue.

Under the name Yehoshua of Ēatūn, I will be releasing psalms, hymns, singles, and other gospel-related music as this body of work expands. Some of it will emerge directly from The Keeper’s Lantern and its world. Some of it will stand on its own. Some of it will be meditative, some devotional, some solemn, some expansive. But all of it belongs to the same larger vision that has shaped my work from the beginning.

That includes the audiobook as well. When The Keeper’s Lantern is released in audiobook form, the psalms are intended to appear not merely as spoken passages, but as full musical productions within the audiobook itself. In that sense, the music is not separate from the book’s world. It is part of it. It grows from the same flame.

That is another reason I wanted the musical work to have its own proper name and place.

And that is why this Substack now has a dedicated section under Yehoshua of Ēatūn. It gives that musical work a home. It creates a place where future updates can be followed more clearly. And it marks this part of my work for what it is: not a side note, but a distinct branch of the same creative and spiritual calling.

So let this article serve as the formal introduction.

Yehoshua of Ēatūn is the name under which I release my music.

It is a name drawn from the Hebrew root of my first name, a name whose scriptural world is bound up with deliverance, calling, and continuity. It is joined to the older historical form of my family name, rooted in the English past from which that name descends.

It is not a mask.
It is not an invention detached from me.
It is not an aesthetic exercise.

It is my name, carried more deeply into its own origins.

And it is the name under which this music will now be known.

Beginning with The Flame Remains, and continuing through future psalms, hymns, singles, and gospel-centered releases, that is the name that will carry this work forward.

There are moments in life when a single question reveals far more than the person asking it intends. Recently, I was cornered by a self-proclaimed pastor and asked a question meant, I suspect, to test the boundaries of my faith:

Would I condemn a lifelong Hindu to hell?

My answer was simple.

No. I will not.

Not because truth does not matter.
Not because doctrine does not matter.
Not because I believe all paths are equal.
And certainly not because I deny Christ.

I said no because I am not the Judge.

That seat is not mine.

Too often, in the name of religion, men rush to occupy a throne that does not belong to them. They speak as though they have been vested with the authority to seal the eternal fate of another human soul. They pronounce damnation with a confidence that seems less like holiness and more like arrogance clothed in piety. They imagine that harshness is righteousness, that condemnation is courage, and that presumption is faithfulness.

But I do not see Christ giving ordinary men the right to sit in His seat.

I see the opposite.

I see warning.

I see restraint.

I see humility.

And I see a repeated command that should terrify every self-righteous accuser: the measure you use shall be measured to you again.

In the words of Jesus:

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”
— Matthew 7:1–2, 1599 Geneva Bible

These are not the words of moral relativism. These are not the words of a Christ who does not care about truth. These are the words of the Son of God warning sinful men not to pretend they are sinless enough to stand above others as final arbiters of their eternal fate.

And Christ does not stop there. He goes further:

“And why seest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, and perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?”
— Matthew 7:3

This is not merely a rebuke of hypocrisy. It is an exposure of the human heart. Men are often eager to inspect the souls of others while leaving their own souls unexamined. They are swift to condemn foreign error, yet blind to the corruption of pride, cruelty, vanity, malice, and spiritual self-exaltation within themselves. They hunger to call others damned, but tremble very little before the possibility that they themselves are guilty of usurping the place of God.

That is the danger.

When a man assumes for himself the authority to condemn, he has ceased merely offering testimony and has begun playing judge.

And there is only one Judge.

Scripture says:

“For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.”
— John 5:22

If all judgment has been committed unto the Son, then it has not been committed unto me.

Not unto a pastor.
Not unto a preacher.
Not unto a theologian.
Not unto a man with a microphone, a pulpit, a following, or a title.

Unto the Son.

This matters profoundly, because there is a great difference between bearing witness to the truth and pronouncing final sentence upon a soul.

I will absolutely testify to Christ. I will proclaim without apology that Christ is Lord. I will affirm what He Himself said:

“I am that way, and that truth, and that life. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
— John 14:6

I will affirm that salvation is in Him. I will affirm that all men stand in need of mercy, redemption, repentance, and grace. I will affirm that no philosophy, no idol, no ritual, and no earthly system can save a human soul apart from God.

But affirming Christ as the only way is not the same thing as appointing myself His replacement in judgment.

That distinction is where many lose their footing.

There are those who seem to believe that faithfulness requires them to condemn particular persons by name and destiny, as though zeal itself were proof of righteousness. Yet the New Testament is full of warnings against exactly this spirit.

Paul writes:

“Who art thou that condemnest another man’s servant? he standeth or falleth to his own master: yea, he shall be established: for God is able to make him stand.”
— Romans 14:4

James writes even more sharply:

“There is one Lawgiver, which is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another man?”
— James 4:12

That question should thunder in the conscience of every person eager to condemn:

Who art thou?

Who art thou, O man, to seize the authority of the Eternal?
Who art thou, O sinner, to sit above another sinner and speak as if Heaven itself had delegated its throne unto thee?
Who art thou to damn what God has not commanded thee to damn?

There is a kind of counterfeit righteousness that thrives on condemnation. It feels holy because it is severe. It feels bold because it is unyielding. It feels pure because it always points outward. But it is often nothing more than pride dressed in biblical language.

A man may know many verses and still not know Christ.

A man may speak often of hell and still have no fear of his own presumption.

A man may claim to defend God while dishonoring Him by acting as though God needs help occupying His own seat.

And here is the deeper danger: when Christians become known primarily for their hunger to condemn, they cease to reflect the posture of Christ toward sinners and begin to reflect the posture of the accuser.

Jesus did not shrink from calling sin what it is. He did not compromise truth. He did not bless falsehood. But He also did not authorize ordinary men to thunder final damnation over every person they encounter. Instead, He repeatedly turned the gaze back upon the heart of the one doing the accusing.

When the woman taken in adultery was brought before Him, and her accusers stood ready in their self-assurance, Jesus said:

“Let him that is among you without sin, cast the first stone at her.”
— John 8:7

That moment is devastating, because it reveals a truth many religious people still resist: the one most eager to condemn may be the one least prepared to do so.

This does not mean sin is ignored. It means that judgment belongs rightly to the sinless One, not to the guilty crowd.

And we are the guilty crowd.

That is why I will not condemn a Hindu to hell. Nor a Muslim. Nor an atheist. Nor anyone else by my own authority.

I may grieve for error.
I may speak truth.
I may testify that Christ is the way.
I may urge repentance.
I may warn that all men must face God.

But I will not pronounce myself the steward of eternal sentence.

Because I, too, must stand before the judgment seat.

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:10

Not the judgment seat of a pastor.
Not the judgment seat of public opinion.
Not the judgment seat of religious ego.
The judgment seat of Christ.

That reality should produce fear and trembling, not swagger.

It should produce repentance, not theatrical condemnation.

It should produce humility, mercy, and sobriety in every believer who understands that he lives not by his own righteousness, but by grace.

And perhaps this is what troubles me most about those who are so eager to pass sentence on others: their confidence often seems untouched by the terrifying possibility that they themselves may be judged by the very spirit they wield so casually.

Christ warned us plainly: with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged.

If you make your life into a tribunal, do not be surprised when you are summoned before one.

If you choose severity over mercy, do not imagine yourself immune from severity.

If you delight in placing burdens on souls, do not assume your own soul is weightless.

This is why I believe that one who insists he is called to pass judgment upon others is walking on spiritually dangerous ground. I do not say this lightly. I say it because there is a profound difference between discernment and condemnation.

Christians are indeed called to discern. We are called to test spirits, to reject falsehood, to recognize sin, to rebuke evil, and to hold fast to truth. But discernment is not the same as usurping divine authority. Warning is not the same as sentencing. Fidelity is not the same as self-deification.

The moment a man imagines himself righteous because he condemns, he has already fallen into one of the oldest temptations: to become as God.

That is why, in The Way of Quiet Light, I cannot embrace a faith posture rooted in self-exaltation. The light of Christ does not call me to enthrone myself. It calls me to kneel. It calls me to repent. It calls me to speak truth without becoming possessed by the intoxication of power. It calls me to remember that I am a servant, not a sovereign.

And so I say this plainly:

I believe in Christ.
I believe He is the way.
I believe every soul ultimately answers to Him.
I believe truth matters.
I believe error is real.
I believe salvation belongs to God.

But I do not believe that I, as an ordinary man, have the authority to declare the eternal fate of another human being as though I were seated in the court of Heaven.

That authority belongs to Christ alone.

And I will not steal what is His.

The world does not need more self-anointed judges masquerading as saints. It needs more men broken enough to remember that they, too, require mercy. It needs more Christians who fear God more than they enjoy condemning others. It needs more souls willing to point upward rather than sit higher.

So when asked whether I would condemn a lifelong Hindu to hell, my answer remains the same:

No.

I will testify to Christ.
I will speak what I believe to be true.
I will not deny the Gospel.
But I will not place myself in the seat of judgment.

Because the seat is not mine.

It never was.

And it never will be.

Over the past several years, a television series has quietly grown into one of the most widely watched portrayals of the life of Jesus ever produced. The series, The Chosen, created by filmmaker Dallas Jenkins, attempts something that previous films and television projects rarely attempted: a long-form dramatic retelling of the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth through the lives of the people who encountered him.

Rather than presenting the Gospel narrative as a sequence of well-known events, the series slows down and spends time with the human beings surrounding the story. Fishermen struggling with debt, scholars wrestling with theological questions, tax collectors isolated from their communities, and individuals searching for redemption all become central to the narrative. Through their experiences, the viewer is invited not simply to observe the story of Christ, but to experience it through the eyes of those whose lives were changed by encountering him.

For viewers who approach faith from a reflective or contemplative perspective, the series offers an unusual opportunity. It allows the Gospel narrative to unfold gradually, giving space to the emotional, social, and personal realities of the people who lived within that world. For those of us exploring spiritual themes through projects like The Way of Quiet Light, this slower approach invites a deeper reflection on how faith often begins: not through certainty, but through curiosity, struggle, and the quiet recognition that something extraordinary has entered ordinary life.

Season One: The Invitation to Follow

The first season of The Chosen establishes the world of first-century Judea by focusing almost entirely on the lives of individuals before they become followers of Jesus. Rather than introducing Christ immediately as the central figure, the series introduces the viewer to the brokenness, pressures, and struggles faced by the people who will ultimately encounter him.

Mary Magdalene is portrayed as a woman burdened by trauma and searching for freedom from the darkness that has consumed her life. Simon Peter appears as a fisherman desperate to resolve crushing financial problems while attempting to care for his family. Matthew is depicted as a brilliant but socially isolated tax collector whose work for the Roman authorities has left him alienated from his own people. Nicodemus, a respected Pharisee and scholar, begins the story as a man deeply knowledgeable about the law but quietly wrestling with questions about the nature of God’s presence.

By the time Jesus finally appears within the narrative, the viewer has already become familiar with the emotional landscape of the people whose lives he will soon disrupt. This storytelling approach reinforces one of the central themes of the Gospel itself: Christ does not enter the lives of people who are already perfect. He enters lives that are wounded, complicated, skeptical, and searching for meaning.

The first season ultimately revolves around the idea of invitation. Jesus calls individuals who are unlikely candidates for greatness, and he calls them not because they are already prepared, but because they are willing to listen. For many viewers, the emotional power of this season lies in its reminder that the beginning of faith is often a moment of recognition—a moment when someone hears a call and decides, despite uncertainty, to follow.

Season Two: The Formation of a Community

In the second season, the narrative shifts away from individual encounters and begins to explore the formation of a community around Jesus. The disciples are no longer isolated figures who meet Christ one at a time. Instead, they are learning to live and travel together while attempting to understand the meaning of the teachings they are hearing.

This period of the story reveals the deeply human nature of the early followers of Jesus. The disciples argue with one another, misunderstand Christ’s teachings, and sometimes struggle with jealousy, pride, or doubt. The series presents them not as perfect figures who immediately comprehend the significance of the moment, but as people slowly learning how to walk a new path.

The second season also explores the growing tension between the expectations of the people and the reality of Jesus’ message. Many in Judea expected the arrival of a political Messiah who would challenge Roman authority and restore national sovereignty. Instead, Jesus begins speaking about a kingdom that operates according to entirely different principles. His teachings emphasize humility, mercy, forgiveness, and transformation of the human heart rather than the overthrow of political power.

Through these moments, the season highlights one of the most profound elements of the Gospel narrative: the kingdom that Jesus describes does not resemble the kingdoms of the world. It is not established through domination or force, but through personal transformation and a radical rethinking of what it means to live in relationship with God and with one another.

Season Three: Expansion and Influence

By the third season, the ministry of Jesus has begun to expand dramatically. Crowds gather to hear him teach, stories of miracles travel quickly throughout the region, and the small group of followers who began the journey now finds itself at the center of a rapidly growing movement.

With that growth comes increasing pressure. The religious authorities begin paying closer attention to Jesus’ teachings, recognizing that his message challenges established interpretations of the law and the authority structures surrounding it. At the same time, the disciples themselves must grapple with the responsibility that comes with being associated with someone whose influence continues to grow.

Season Three emphasizes the disruptive nature of Jesus’ message. His teachings challenge assumptions about social status, religious purity, and who deserves compassion. The series portrays how these teachings resonate deeply with ordinary people while simultaneously creating anxiety among those whose authority might be threatened by them.

For the disciples, this stage of the journey introduces a new emotional challenge. What began as a personal encounter with a remarkable teacher has now become something much larger. The movement they joined is beginning to reshape the expectations and beliefs of the communities around them.

Season Four: Rising Conflict

Season Four marks a significant shift in tone as the story moves toward the more difficult chapters of the Gospel narrative. By this point, Jesus is no longer merely a teacher attracting curiosity from local crowds. His growing influence has made him a figure of controversy and concern among both religious leaders and political authorities.

The religious establishment increasingly views his teachings as a threat to their authority and interpretations of the law. Meanwhile, Roman officials remain cautious about any movement capable of drawing large gatherings of people in an already politically sensitive region.

Within the community of disciples, the rising tension produces uncertainty and fear. Following Jesus is no longer simply a spiritual adventure filled with inspiring teachings and miracles. It now carries the possibility of genuine danger.

This season deepens the emotional complexity of the series by exploring the cost of faith. Belief in Jesus begins to require courage, not only from the disciples but also from the ordinary people who continue choosing to listen to him despite the growing pressure surrounding his presence.

Season Five: The Road Toward Jerusalem

The most recent season continues guiding the story toward the final events recorded in the Gospel accounts. As Jesus and his followers move closer to Jerusalem, the sense of inevitability surrounding the narrative becomes increasingly clear.

The disciples begin to sense that the path ahead will not lead to the type of triumph many of them once imagined. Their expectations of political victory and national restoration are slowly replaced by the realization that Jesus is moving toward something far more profound and far more costly.

Themes of preparation dominate this season. The characters begin to confront the possibility that the transformation Jesus is bringing to the world will not come through power or military victory, but through sacrifice and radical love.

For viewers who know the Gospel story, this stage of the narrative carries a quiet tension. The audience understands where the story is heading even as the characters themselves struggle to comprehend it.

Why This Series Resonates

Throughout history, countless films and artistic works have attempted to depict the life of Jesus. What makes The Chosen distinctive is not simply the scale of its production or the number of episodes devoted to the story. Instead, its strength lies in its commitment to exploring the humanity surrounding the Gospel narrative.

By giving time and attention to the lives of fishermen, scholars, skeptics, and seekers, the series reminds viewers that the story of Christ was never meant to exist in isolation from the people whose lives it touched. The Gospel narrative unfolds not only through miracles and sermons but also through relationships, misunderstandings, doubts, and moments of quiet recognition.

For those reflecting on faith through the lens of The Way of Quiet Light, the series offers something particularly valuable. It reminds us that the path of faith has always been walked by imperfect individuals navigating uncertainty while gradually learning to trust the light they have encountered.

Looking Ahead

The story presented in The Chosen remains unfinished. Future seasons are expected to explore the final events of the Gospel narrative, including the crucifixion and the resurrection. As the series continues, it will inevitably move into the most emotionally powerful chapters of the Christian story.

Yet even before reaching those moments, the series has already achieved something remarkable. It has invited millions of viewers to revisit a story that has shaped the spiritual imagination of humanity for nearly two thousand years, presenting it not as distant legend but as a living narrative filled with human struggle, hope, and transformation.

For those willing to reflect on it more deeply, the series becomes more than entertainment. It becomes an invitation to reconsider what it means to encounter a story that has changed the world—and to ask whether that same encounter might still hold meaning today.

There are moments in life when we realize that we are not only living our own story.

We are also continuing the story of those who came before us.

And, whether we intend to or not, we are shaping something that will remain for those who come after.

Much of The Way of Quiet Light has been about that realization.

It is about learning to move through the world thoughtfully. Quietly. Deliberately. Recognizing that the choices we make today may echo further than we can see.

Why the Geneva Bible

The Geneva Bible, first printed in 1560, and later published in a widely known edition in 1599, emerged during the time of the Protestant Reformation.

It is a text that would have been familiar to the Pilgrims and Puritans, and to many of the early generations whose lives helped shape the modern world.

For many people, the Geneva Bible represents a moment in religious and cultural history.

But for me, the connection is also more personal.

My grandmother’s middle name was Geneva.

Today, my daughter also carries that same name.

Across generations, the name has continued forward in my family. When I began reflecting on what kind of work could become part of The Way of Quiet Light, the Geneva Bible felt like a natural foundation for study and reflection.

Not simply because of its history.

But because it represents a bridge between generations.

A Companion to The Way of Quiet Light

The Geneva Bible Project will be developed as a study companion to The Way of Quiet Light.

The goal is not to rewrite the text or reinterpret it through modern ideology.

Rather, the goal is to engage with it thoughtfully.

To study it.

To reflect on it.

And to build a structured guide that explores the text in a way that aligns with the philosophy of The Way of Quiet Light — humility, reflection, patience, and the pursuit of understanding.

Over time, the project will grow to include:

• A prepared working edition of the Geneva Bible for study
• A companion study guide connected to The Way of Quiet Light
• A future combined work bringing both together

This is not a short-term project.

It is something that will take time.

Careful reading.

Thoughtful reflection.

And patience.

A Quiet Light Reflection on Islam, Modesty, and Extremism, with Iran As a Lens

Human dignity — and the sacredness of conscience — depends on choice, not coercion. Yet in every religious tradition, teachings intended to cultivate virtue can be twisted into tools of control when power, fear, and ideology mix.

This tension between spiritual invitation and political mandate becomes particularly clear when we look at the way modesty and dress codes have been understood — especially in Islamic contexts — and how they have been enforced in extremes.

One of the most illuminating examples is Iran before and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, where modesty shifted from being a personal, cultural, or religious expression to becoming a state-imposed requirement with profound consequences for women’s freedom and dignity.

The Traditional Vision: Modesty as Virtue, Not Violence

Across Islamic scholarship, modesty (ḥayāʾ) is a virtue rooted in humility, moral awareness, and restraint. The Qur’an calls for modesty in behaviour and gaze for both men and women, and many Islamic scholars place great emphasis on inward disposition, not outward policing.

Unlike fear-based interpretations that locate sin in other people’s bodies, the traditional understanding of modesty is grounded in:

• personal accountability,

• self-restraint,

• and respect for others while preserving individual agency.

In most Islamic legal traditions (madhhabs), modest dress is encouraged but not rigidly defined, and there is historical diversity in how Muslims have expressed modesty in clothing, behaviour, and public interactions. Many scholars agree that covering the face (niqāb) is not universally required, and that dress codes should be understood in a cultural context, not just a doctrinal decree.

This traditional approach sees modesty not as a burden, but as an invitation to personal integrity and respect.

Iran Before 1979: Cultural Freedom and Complexity

To understand how traditional contexts can be transformed into extreme enforcement, it helps to look at life in Iran before the 1979 Revolution.

Under the Pahlavi monarchy — particularly from the 1940s to the late 1970s — women in Iran legally enjoyed greater freedom of dress. The prior ban on veiling instituted in the 1930s was relaxed, and women were free to dress as they wished, adopting Western styles, modern fashions, and professional attire. The hijab was legal, but social norms increasingly associated it with conservatism or lower socioeconomic status; many women chose not to wear it at all.

This was not a society free of problems — far from it — but it was one in which women’s clothing was not centrally controlled by law and in which modesty took diverse forms. The public conversation about dress was shaped by culture, class, personal choice, and evolving social norms.

Revolution and the Turn to Mandate

When the Islamic Republic was established in 1979, one of the earliest—and now most iconic—changes was the imposition of compulsory hijab.

Less than a month after the revolution, Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini decreed that women must observe Islamic dress codes in public workplaces and could not enter government offices without the hijab. In less than 5 years, this became a full legal requirement with criminal penalties for noncompliance.

What had once been personal religious expression was now a state mandate. The shift was not gradual or organic — it was imposed, legislated, and enforced through the power of the state.

For many, this wasn’t modesty — it was control.

Extremist Enforcement and Its Human Cost

Making modesty compulsory carries consequences:

• It becomes a marker of obedience, not virtue.

• It becomes political, not spiritual.

• It becomes punishable, not persuasive.

Under Iran’s compulsory hijab laws, enforcement extended beyond gentle reminders. Police and morality units have detained women for “improper dress,” jailed them, fined them, or subjected them to forced re-education.

The international attention on this issue — particularly after the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of morality police in 2022 — highlights how extremist enforcement of modesty can cause deep social trauma and ignite broad protests.

The story of Iran illustrates how a personal religious practice — chosen in the privacy of the heart — can become weaponized when it’s turned into a legal mandate backed by punishment.

When Modesty Is Mandated, Freedom Is Lost

In a tradition that calls every believer — man and woman — to moral responsibility, the act of legislating personal dress codes is not simply a religious decision; it is a political imposition.

Ironically, many of the most vocal enforcers of modesty in the name of religion are the same authorities who criminalize choices that fall outside their narrow interpretation.

This dynamic mirrors what happens when any religious teaching becomes detached from its spiritual roots and gets merged with state power:

• The spirit of modesty becomes a law enforcement issue.

• The virtue of humility becomes a badge of compliance.

• Women’s bodies become the frontline of moral governance.

This is true whether the mandate comes from clerics in Tehran, judges in Riyadh, pastors in rural congregations, or religious commentators online. Fear as a motivator always overshadows conscience, and control always undermines choice.

Modesty as Personal Integrity, Not Public Police

The Way of Quiet Light holds fast to the belief that true spiritual practice must be chosen, not compelled.

Faith asks:

• Is this my conviction?

• Is this my conscience?

• Does this deepen my relationship with God and neighbour?

Fear asks:

• Are you obeying?

• Are you afraid of what will happen if you do not?

The difference is profound.

Modesty, in any faith tradition, should be about inner disposition, not external compulsion.

A Quiet Light Prayer

God of mercy and wisdom,
Teach us to choose virtue for love, not obedience for fear.
Where culture and faith intersect, grant us clarity of conscience.
Where laws govern bodies, they grant dignity to every soul.
May modesty remain a choice of the heart, not a burden of the state.

Amen.

There is a difference between spiritual guidance and spiritual coercion.

There is a difference between inviting someone toward wisdom and threatening them into obedience.

And there is a difference between light and fear, even when fear is wrapped in Bible verses.

Recently, I encountered a message directed at women that claimed the following: that God demands modest dress, that immodesty leads to lust, pride, and immorality, and that women who do not comply will face severe punishment in hell — their suffering serving as a warning to others.

This message cited Scripture.
It sounded authoritative.
And it was profoundly unaligned with the heart of the Gospel.

This essay is not written to mock faith, dismiss Scripture, or diminish the spiritual value of humility. It is written because Scripture deserves better than to be used as a weapon, and because women deserve better than to be threatened in God’s name.

Scripture Was Not Written to Terrorize

The verses most often used in these arguments — 1 Timothy 2:9–10 and 1 Peter 3:3–4 — are pastoral instructions written to specific communities, in specific cultural contexts, addressing wealth display, social hierarchy, and public status, not issuing eternal threats over clothing choices.

They do not say:

• “Dress this way or go to hell.”

• “Your body is dangerous.”

• “You are responsible for the thoughts of others.”

They say something far more subtle and far more human:

Do not confuse outward display with inward devotion.
Do not let status replace substance.
Do not mistake appearance for righteousness.

That is wisdom — not condemnation.

When Scripture is stripped of context and infused with fear, it stops forming disciples and starts producing compliance. And compliance is not the same thing as faith.

Jesus Was Clear About Where Sin Begins

When Jesus spoke about lust, He did something radical — something many modern religious messages quietly reverse.

He placed responsibility entirely on the one who looks.

“Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery in his heart.”

Jesus did not say:

• “If she dresses differently, you are excused.”

• “If her body causes your thoughts, she is to blame.”

• “Control women so men can remain righteous.”

He said the problem is the heart.

Quiet Light theology refuses to shift moral responsibility from personal conscience to someone else’s body. That relocation is not biblical — it is convenient.

Modesty Is About Intention, Not Control

True modesty cannot be enforced.

It cannot be measured by inches of fabric.
It cannot be policed without becoming something else entirely.
And it cannot be sustained through fear.

Biblical modesty speaks to the orientation of the heart, not the management of appearance. It is about humility, freedom from vanity, and integrity of purpose — qualities that cannot be imposed from the outside.

A woman dressing confidently, comfortably, or beautifully is not rebelling against God.

A man refusing to discipline his thoughts is not obeying God — no matter how many verses he quotes to justify it.

Fear Is Not a Fruit of the Spirit

Nowhere in Scripture are we told that fear is evidence of holiness.

We are told the opposite.

Love casts out fear.
Perfect love drives it away.

When teaching produces:

• shame instead of healing

• control instead of wisdom

• fear instead of freedom

It has already departed from the Spirit it claims to represent.

The Gospel transforms people from the inside out. It does not threaten them into submission. When obedience is rooted in terror, it is no longer obedience — it is survival.

God Does Not Protect Women by Policing Them

One of the most damaging ideas hidden in fear-based modesty teaching is the claim that women must be controlled “for their own protection.”

This idea quietly assumes:

• men are incapable of self-control

• women are responsible for male behaviour

• God designed half of humanity as a spiritual liability

Scripture teaches none of this.

Self-control is a command, not a suggestion.
It is a fruit of the Spirit, not a female obligation.
And it belongs to the one who desires — not the one being perceived.

When responsibility is shifted away from the heart and onto the body, righteousness is replaced with blame.

The Quiet Light Alternative

The Way of Quiet Light does not deny modesty.
It rejects terror.

It does not dismiss Scripture.
It rejects distortion.

It does not erase moral responsibility.
It insists that responsibility remain where Jesus placed it — within the human heart.

Quiet Light teaches that faith grows through illumination, not intimidation. Through conscience, not coercion. Through love that transforms rather than fear that controls.

A Quiet Light Prayer

God of truth and gentleness,
Teach us to walk in wisdom without fear.
Free us from shame disguised as righteousness.
Help us clothe ourselves not in anxiety or control,
but in compassion, humility, and love.

May we honour You not by policing bodies,
but by transforming hearts.
Amen.

Final Reflection

If a teaching produces fear before love,
control before conscience,
and shame before grace —
It is not light.

And light does not threaten.
It illuminates.

That is the Way of Quiet Light.

In this sermon, I reflect on the difference between faith that speaks and faith that acts. Drawing from lived experience and Scripture, I explore how prayer and belief were never meant to replace responsibility, but to prepare us to move toward compassion, presence, and real help.

This message is part of The Way of Quiet Light — a path shaped by humility, dignity, and quiet, incarnational faith. It is an invitation to consider how our belief shows up in the world, especially when someone in front of us is suffering.

There is a moment that breaks something quietly inside a person.

It happens when someone finally names their need — hunger, exhaustion, fear, lack — and instead of being met with care, they are told that their honesty represents a failure of faith.

That they are “rejecting the Gospel.”
That they should simply pray more.
That their need itself is the problem.

This moment does not strengthen faith.
It fractures it.

Naming Need Is Not Faithlessness

Saying “I don’t have food to eat” is not a theological statement.
It is a statement of reality.

Faith does not require denial of circumstance.
It does not ask people to pretend they are not hungry, not tired, not overwhelmed.

Throughout Scripture, suffering is named openly:

• hunger is acknowledged

• grief is voiced

• fear is spoken aloud

• need is brought into the light

Silencing reality in the name of belief is not faith.
It is avoidance.

How This Accusation Reverses the Gospel

When someone is told that asking for help means rejecting faith, something has been turned upside down.

The Gospel consistently moves toward those in need:

• the hungry

• the sick

• the poor

• the exhausted

• the overwhelmed

To accuse a suffering person of faithlessness because they ask for help is not defending the Gospel — it is contradicting it.

Faith was never meant to be a test of endurance where those who suffer quietly are praised and those who speak are condemned.

The Quiet Violence of Spiritual Gaslighting

This kind of response causes harm because it does several things at once:

• It invalidates lived experience

• It spiritualizes neglect

• It shifts responsibility away from the helper

• It places blame on the vulnerable

• It reframes inaction as righteousness

The person in need is left feeling:

• ashamed for asking

• guilty for being honest

• afraid to speak again

• unsure whether faith is safe

This is not correction.
It is displacement of responsibility disguised as piety.

Why People Say This (Even If They Mean Well)

Often, accusations like this do not come from cruelty.

They come from discomfort.

Helping is hard.
Suffering is complex.
Resources are limited.
Answers are unclear.

So instead of saying:
“I don’t know how to help”
or
“I can’t help right now”

People say:
“You’re rejecting faith.”

That response protects the speaker’s sense of righteousness — but at the cost of another person’s dignity.

Faith Must Be Safe for the Vulnerable

Any faith tradition that cannot sit with hunger, fear, or need without deflecting into accusation has lost its grounding.

Faith should be the safest place to speak honestly — not the most dangerous.

The Way of Quiet Light holds this line clearly:

Asking for help is not a lack of faith.
It is an act of trust.

Trust that someone will listen.
Trust that truth is allowed.
Trust that dignity will be preserved.

A Quiet Blessing

For those who have been told to be silent when they were hungry.
For those accused of faithlessness for naming need.
For those who were met with words when they needed action.

You were not wrong to speak.
You were not weak to ask.
You were not rejecting faith.

Faith that cannot hear need has stopped listening.

Light does not shame the vulnerable.
It meets them where they are — quietly, honestly, and with care.
